Have you heard this term ‘Parental Burnout’ lately? As for me I have read few articles on this one from various sources. But, still was unsure about What’s the difference between Parental Burnout and Everyday Parenting Stress.

They sound quite similar Right. But, after doing a bit of research on both these terms I am evident that they are very different ! So, to share some insights with the parents who might unknowingly be dealing with any of these , I thought why not to shed some light on this topic. I know most of the millennial parents are on the same boat as me . We all are facing everyday Parenting Stress one or the other day and sometimes even Parental Burnout .

In this blog, I will explain few differences between Parental Burnout and Everyday Parenting Stress. Most significantly, how to figure out if you are also dealing with any of them? Additionally, I will also share some tips which has personally helped me to manage Parenting Stress better than ever before!

Meaning of Everyday Parenting Stress

Everyday parenting stress happens with most of us. It is just the common challenges, pressures, and demands which we parents experience in our day-to-day lives while raising our sometimes difficult little ones . It is not a cakewalk to deal with multitude of responsibilities, decision-making, and emotional strain which comes with nurturing and guiding our children through various stages of development.

1.Time Management: 24 hours in a day are not enough for us and most of the times it is overwhelming to juggle between multiple responsibilities, such as work, household chores, and taking care of children. We are unable to balance various tasks and meet everyone’s needs which contribute to stress.

2.Behavioral Challenges: Sometimes our little ones are too difficult to handle, throws a lot of tantrum, siblings are in a conflict, there is no discipline in the house and so how to fret not! Raising children involves lot of financial responsibilities, such as providing for their basic needs, education, healthcare, and extracurricular activities. 6.Work-Life Balance: Struggle to allocate time and energy between work and family life is quite challenging and this often lead to feeling of guilt, stress, and a constant sense of imbalance.

7.Lack of Support: Many times we parents do not have any assistance of elders or friends to help us in the parenting journey. Lack of this inadequate assistance can increase the stress. We feel isolated or overwhelmed without a strong support system which in turn intensify everyday parenting stress.

In simple terms, think of parental burnout as a marathon with no water stations along the way. As parents, we pour our hearts and souls into taking care of our little ones, but sometimes we forget to refill our own cups. We keep pushing ourselves to meet everyone’s needs, forgetting that we have our limits too.

It’s like having a battery that drains and drains until it’s completely depleted. Parental burnout drains that inner battery, leaving moms and dads feeling physically exhausted, emotionally drained, and mentally fried.

Now let us look at some indicators which may suggest you are coping with a parental burnout:

  1. Persistent Fatigue: You get ample sleep or rest but still feel exhausted both physically and emotionally with parenting responsibilities.
  2. Emotional Withdrawal: Do you feel a sense of detachment or emotional numbness towards your children? You somehow find it challenging to engage emotionally with your children or may even feel disconnected from their needs and experiences.
  3. Decreased Interest and Enjoyment: Activities and hobbies that once cheered you up has lost its appeal. You have also no interest in spending quality time with your children or engaging in some fun activities with them.
  4. Increased Irritability and Impatience: You become easily frustrated, irritable, or short-tempered with your children or partner. Small issues or challenges that were once manageable can feel overwhelming now.

  8. Withdrawal from Social Activities: You may withdraw from social interactions, including spending time with friends or participating in social events. Then obviously you feel a lack of support due to loneliness creeping in.

These signs vary from person to person, and experiencing one or more of these signs does not necessarily mean parental burnout is present. However, if these symptoms persist over an extended period and significantly impact daily functioning and well-being, it may be indicative of parental burnout.

Now you know about both these terms individually but what are the key differences between both of them and how to identify what you are dealing with:

  • Duration: Everyday parenting stress is usually temporary, while parental burnout can be long-lasting.
  • Intensity: Everyday parenting stress can be mild to moderate, while parental burnout is usually severe.
  • Symptoms: Everyday parenting stress can cause symptoms such as irritability, fatigue, and anxiety. Parental burnout can cause more severe symptoms, such as depression, detachment from children, and thoughts of harming oneself or others.

If we don’t deal with Everyday Parenting Stress, very soon it can turn into a chronic irritability, lack of motivation , or even losing interest in activities we used to enjoy before. This is nothing but “Parental Burnout”.

Suddenly, those once blissful moments of parenthood feel like a never-ending chore and so it is important to come out of this phase as quickly as possible.

First and foremost, acknowledge that you are dealing with Everyday Parenting Stress or more severe “Parental Burnout”. Then you take below proactive steps to address it.

2.Prioritize Self-Care:

Read a book, go for a walk, practice yoga or indulge in whatever activities rejuvenate you. Remember, how the Parental Burnout drains the battery inside you , so now is the time to recharge it and show up as the best version of yourself for your family.

The other day I was talking to Anjali, my friend and a busy mom, she realized that she needed time for herself. She started waking up 30 minutes earlier to enjoy a cup of coffee and read a few pages of her favorite book before the household woke up. Last month, I suddenly felt overwhelmed with the demands of parenting and work. So,I reached out to my parents and siblings for support and arranged a weekly “family night” .Now, they would take turns watching the kids, allowing me and my partner to have a dedicated date night and some quality alone time.

Learn to say no to additional commitments or responsibilities that may drain your energy further. Establish boundaries and communicate your needs to both your children and your partner. Remember, it’s okay to put yourself first sometimes.

I will give you example of Reena, my college friend and a mom of two. She found herself constantly saying yes to every school committee and volunteer opportunity. She realized it was taking a toll on her well-being and decided to prioritize her time .Now she selects only one or two activities that truly aligns with her passions and schedule.

5.Practice Mindfulness:

Don’t do it all alone. Delegate age-appropriate tasks to your children, involve your partner in household chores, and distribute responsibilities among family members. Sharing the load lightens the burden and fosters a sense of teamwork.

Lily , a mom of three, felt overwhelmed by the household chores. She created a chore chart with age-appropriate tasks for her kids and assigned specific responsibilities to her partner as well. On the other hand, Parental burnout is more like a sneaky prankster, playing the long game. It creeps up on you when you least expect it, hiding behind those sleepless nights and endless to-do lists. It’s the stress that lingers, like a clingy shadow, draining your energy and turning even the simplest tasks into monumental feats.

Parental burnout is a real term and is prevalent issue globally across many cultures. But, fret not, now you can recognize and not ignore the signs of Parental Burnout or Everyday Parenting Stress.
