However, in some cases parents may exhibit much more toxic behaviors which may be difficult to ignore, such as controlling or manipulating their child, emotional or physical abuse, or neglect.

In such scenarios you develop a feeling of resentment and hatred towards them, but still you can try to understand the many possible reasons why a parent might exhibit toxic behavior. This may help you to understand and even improve your relationship with them as nobody has a choice to choose their parents.

They may have high expectations

Some parents are toxic or too controlling as they may have high expectations with their children due to cultural or societal influence .They want their children to succeed and have a better life than they did. Others may have high expectations because they believe it will motivate their children to achieve their full potential.

In some more cases, parents wants to fulfill their own desires or aspirations through their child by setting some unrealistic milestones for them. They could not have achieved a certain career or academic path due to financial constraints or other factors and now they want to see themselves achieving all of that through their child without considering their desires or abilities.

Side effects of high expectations set by parents: When parents have excessively high expectations, it can put pressure on their children and lead to feelings of anxiety, stress, or even depression. Therefore, it is important for parents to maintain a healthy balance between supporting and challenging their children while also promoting their well-being and mental health.

Their own upbringing could be toxic

The parents upbringing style could be authoritarian which means strict parenting with very little emotional connect. These kind of parents have always observed and seen that they how their own parents have looked down upon lenient parenting. They don’t want their kids to walk all over them by being their friend and not parent. So they turn to strict parenting based on their disciplinary beliefs.
These harsh parents seldom allow their kids to voice their opinion or question the parents’ decisions.

Side effects of authoritarian parents: Authoritarian style of parenting can sometimes force a child to become rebellious at a later point in time. Additionally, such child may have low self esteem and anxiety, exhibit anti-social behavior and perceive bullying as normal.

They could have mental health issues

why parents are so toxic?

It can be difficult to recognize signs of mental health issues in parents, as every individual is unique and may experience symptoms differently. However, some signs to look out for that may indicate a mental health issue in a parent include:

Changes in mood or behavior: If you notice that your parent’s mood or behavior has changed significantly, such as becoming more irritable, anxious, or withdrawn, this could be a sign of a mental health issue.

Changes in sleep or eating patterns: Mental health issues can also affect a person’s sleep or eating patterns. Your parent may sleep more or less than usual or may have changes in their appetite or weight.

Loss of interest in activities: If your parent has lost interest in activities they used to enjoy, or has stopped participating in hobbies or social events, this could be a sign of depression or other mental health issues.

Substance abuse: If your parent is using drugs or alcohol excessively, this could be a sign of an underlying mental health issue.

Unexplained physical symptoms: Mental health issues can also manifest as physical symptoms, such as headaches, stomach problems, or fatigue, even if there is no underlying medical cause.

Due to mental health issues a parent may exhibit toxic behavior, become emotionally distant, cold-hearted or have difficulty experiencing or expressing emotions. That does not make them a bad person, and seeking help or support is always an option.

If you notice any of the mental health issue signs in your parent, it may be helpful to talk to them about your concerns and encourage them to seek professional help from a mental health provider. Remember to approach the conversation with empathy and compassion, and to reassure your parent that seeking help is a sign of strength and self-care.

They could have a lack of knowledge for effective parenting

Some parents just rely on their elders or society to teach them parenting. They are easily influenced by somebody else’s style of parenting which may not be effective for their own children.

This influence could also be due to the fact that they do not have adequate resources such as books or parenting classes or even good sources from internet to help them know about effective parenting techniques for the current generation.

Additionally, some parents may feel isolated and unsupported with no knowledge of parenting as they do not have any reliable friends or elders who can help in their parenting journey.

All these factors could lead to a toxic parents at the end for a child.

Stressful Work Environment/Living Conditions

Environmental factors such as a stressful work environment or difficult living conditions cannot be ignored here as this can definitely cause individuals to become emotionally distant as a means of self-protection.

Most of the times, Stress is simply a play of memory and imagination of your mind and can be handled by practicing meditation , laughing more often and connecting socially with others.

Bottomline

These are the broad points I can recollect from my own experiences which can cause a parent to be toxic. But, a parent-child relationship is the most crucial and it is important to handle this situation with an open mind from both the sides.

For children : It is important for children who are experiencing toxic behavior from a parent to seek support and help from a trusted adult, such as a teacher, counselor, or family member.

For parents: It is important for parents to recognize that every child is unique and has their own strengths and weaknesses. While it is natural to have expectations for their children, it is important for parents to have realistic expectations and to support their children in their own goals and aspirations. This can involve providing guidance, resources, and support, while also allowing their children the freedom to make their own choices and learn from their mistakes.

It may also be helpful for parents to seek therapy or counseling to address their own issues and work towards improving their relationship with their child.

In any case, it is never acceptable for a parent to engage in toxic behavior towards their child as children have the right to feel safe and supported in their family relationships.
